Woman almost rehomes her two cats for entitled boyfriend who won't compromise, until the internet stepped in with a purrfect reality check: 'Once the pets are yours, you don’t give them up for anything'

Pets are a responsibility for life - that's what the woman in this post has hopefully learned by now. She has a 3 and 5-year-old cat, whom she is considering rehoming to move in with her boyfriend, with "severe cat allergies". He gets hives, which can't be fun to deal with at all. The problem is that he won't compromise at all - he won't take an allergy pill, won't accept them being furbidden from certain spaces, not even if they eat hypoallergenic food and vacuum every day. She was actually thinking about it, until the internet got its claws out and reminded her of the most important rule of pawrenthood: you don't give your pets up for anything.

Cats will be with you through the good times and bad. They'll be with you through many relationships, breakups, heartaches, joyful meowments, and everything in between. We can't say the same about a boyfriend. Your cats are your responsibility and no one else's - they quite literally rely on you to take care of them. And no, it doesn't matter where you give them up to - be it a family member or a shelter, those cats will always wonder why you stopped being their hooman. 

We hope she finds a solution to her dilemma; anything that doesn't involve treating her cats like they are any less than family will do.

  • Not to get too philosophical over here on a page about funny cats on the internets, but there comes a point in all of our lives when we have to learn one purrfect, yet terrible truth: love is not enough to keep a relationship alive. There are many factors that go into a healthy, long-lasting relationship, and for many cat lovers, one of the main ones is that their partner must also love cats. Otherwise, one of you will have to live in a compromise for the rest of their lives.

  • We also think you should end things with your bf, sweetie. Sorry. He's allergic to cats, won't compromise, and you love cats. There's not much to discuss here. You're simply not compatible.

    EDIT: I would never consider giving them to a shelter. The only place they would go would be to my moms or brother who's been around them and they come over all the time.

    TribeFaninPA · 20h ago If you get rid of those cats, you will cause them trauma from wondering where their human went, and you will resent your boyfriend and that resentment will grow. Don't move in with this guy and seeing as how his allergy is not going to go away, you may need to really consider if you two are compatible.

    If he used to be allergic, it's worth having him at least meet them to see how he reacts. Some people (like myself) grow out of their allergies or can build up a tolerance. I'm just wondering how you've even been in a relationship with him if he's so allergic because no matter what you'd have cat fur and dander on your clothes when you're around him?
